For this arrangement I must take time.
Against the heat I will gather early,
Fresh from bud and dew-gloss,
Choose for vigor, not for size,
And the long stems’ bow over my wrist,
For once I have arms full—
They would nearly arrange themselves.
But still I will cut the stems in a bowl,
Pare away lower leaves that turn
Water sour and any brown or insect-
Riddled, prizing one tell-tale worm-hole
To remind me of the worm’s love.
The flowers thirst also. Each morning
I will take care to fill their swelling
Celadon vase. But I’m ahead of myself—
I would do well to remember not
To work too fast, take my pleasure
Here. At this time of year
The arrangement will not last.
