When Spring Came Knocking
When spring came knocking at my door, More beautiful than e’er before, I asked her in; she said, “No way, Outside’s the place to be today.
“I’ve work to do, as you should know, To undo damage done by snow, Dress naked trees in coats of green, And wake the beasts from winter dreams.
“I’ll free still-dozing daffodils From the grasp of winter’s chill, And coax sweet violets into bloom To chase away the lingering gloom.
“I’ll sprinkle robins on the lawn To spread the word that winter’s gone, And invite hummers, one and all, They’ve been waiting for my call.”
