THE CHRISTMAS TREE
What is the significance of the Christmas tree? Here are
a few of the symbols associated with this part of the holiday season.
The tree itself is an evergreen, the symbol of eternal life offered
to us through faith in Christ.
The lights on the tree represent Christ who is "The Light of the
World." Martin Luther was the first to light a tree. He used
candles.
The star on top represents the star of Bethlehem, which directed
the wise men to the site of Christ's birth.
The colors red and green are often used in decorating the tree. Red
symbolizes the blood Christ shed when he paid for our sin by dying on the
cross. It is for this reason that He was born into our world. Green
symbolizes the new life in his resurrection, a new life we can share by
believing in him.
The gifts beneath the tree can be thought of as a symbol of the
gift of eternal life which Christ bought for us. Because of his
love for us, we are motivated to share this great gift with others.
Keep these symbols and their significance in mind the next time
you look at a Christmas tree. Their message contains the true meaning
of Christmas.
